Gilt Market

Gilt Market

Buying and selling gilts

Gilts can either be purchased directly from the DMO at its outright gilt auctions or through the secondary market. Bidders at auction can choose to participate through a Gilt-edged Market Maker (GEMM) who can bid directly by telephone to the DMO on the bidder’s behalf, or by completing an application form, providing that they are members of the DMO’s Approved Group of Investors.

If a private investor wishes to purchase gilts other than via the DMO at outright gilt auctions, the secondary market can be accessed through a stockbroker, bank or the DMO’s Purchase and Sale Service. The Purchase and Sale Service is operated by Computershare Investors Services PLC who are also responsible for maintaining the register of gilt holdings. If you require investment advice please contact a financial advisor.

The DMO publishes a variety of Investor’s Guides, which provide information on buying and selling gilts. Some additional links for those interested in buying and selling gilts appear below.
