The majority of gilts are bought by pension funds, insurance companies and investment banks and the publication  UK Government Securities: A Guide to "Gilts" (1.25 MB) which is updated annually, is aimed at individuals who work for such institutions. Members of the public who are interesting in knowing more about gilts should refer to A Private Investor’s Guide to Gilts (486KB) for an introduction to conventional and index-linked gilts and details on how to buy and sell them. Hard copies are available (free of charge) on request from the DMO by phoning 0845 357 6500. Please note that private investors who wish to buy gilts via a gilt auction or the DMO’s Gilt Purchase and Sale Service need to become a member of the Approved Group of Investors first.
